Croatian football fans set bridge aflame in spectacular anniversary celebration

9 August 2017

On Saturday, fans of Croatian football champions NK Rijeka commemorated veterans with an awe-inspiring fire display spanning more than 1 km.

The group of ultra fans, who call themselves Armada, set Krk Bridge alight in honour of NK Rijeka’s anniversary, in addition to Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders.

Linking the island of Krk with the mainland, Krk Bridge stretches 1430 m. The fiery celebrations saw its length adorned with the light of 222 flares, each representing a soldier from the local Primorje-Gorski Kotar region who perished during the Croatian War of Independence.

Earlier this year, rival ultra groups joined together to set the bullet hole-ridden water tower of Croatia’s eastern city of Vukovar alight as a symbolic unity flame.
