Romanian hip-hop group go viral for wrong reasons over Holocaust Memorial video

Romanian rap and hip-hop group Satra B.E.N.Z. have come under fire on social media for a video shot inside Bucharest’s Holocaust Memorial, although the clip was released over two years ago.

The video for #traparmy, which has over 10 million views and contain expletive language, came to the fore on Wednesday when former human rights activist and Social Democrat MP Petre-Florin Manole released a statement condemning the group for their choice of location and calling for the band to take down the video.

“A monument dedicated to the memory of people persecuted for their ethnicity, a space that should inspire respect and decency, has been transformed into décor for a music video. It’s scandalous and immoral,” Mr Manole wrote.

The MP’s statement (along with the video) swiftly went viral, gaining particular momentum when the Elie Wiesel National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania shared the video.

Balkan Investigative Reporting Network attempted to obtain a statement from the founder and producer of Satra B.E.N.Z., who did not respond to the request.
