Follow of the week: dive into these pleasingly symmetrical communist-era swimming pools

9 October 2017

Enter the pastel-coloured and symmetrical world of communist-era swimming pools, as photographed by Slovakian photographer, Mária Švarbová.

Mária Švarbová is no newcomer in the world of photography. She was featured in Forbes’ 30 under 30 and won the International Photography Awards in 2016. Her Instagram account @maria.svarbova, gives a glimpse into her work, including her popular series Swimming Pool, which looks like it was taken straight of a Wes Anderson film.

The photos were shot in Slovakia’s old communist-era swimming pools, and could be seen both as a praise and a critique of the regime. Švarbová says she also uses image editing software to make the people in the pictures indistinguishable, as though extending the “disinfected” atmosphere of a swimming pool to the swimmer’s personalities which appear to blend into one.

Altogether, the pastel reflective surfaces and identical swimmers create a dreamlike, comedic effect, and more than anything will make you want to take a refreshing dip in the water.
