Exhibition of light dedicated to Russian Revolution centenary opens in Perm

Perm’s Museum of Contemporary Art opened an exhibition on Wednesday exploring ideas of light on the centenary of the Bolshevik seizure of power during the Russian Revolution.

To the Lighthouse takes as its premise Vladimir Lenin’s famous phrase that: “Communism is Soviet power plus the electrification of the whole country” and features artists from all over Russia.

The 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution has been marked by several high-profile cultural events across the country, but has had little political resonance as the Kremlin is apparently wary of celebrating a moment of military defeat and state collapse.

On 7 November 1917, Lenin’s Bolsheviks seized control of Russia’s capital, the culmination of a year of revolutionary turmoil and the beginning of the Soviet Union.

The exhibition is spread over three floors of the Perm museum with each floor tackling a separate theme: modernisation and electrification as a catastrophe, information and the human body, and light and political history.
