Young Russian artists invited to design Russia’s first Shakespeare monument

Russia’s top young artists have been called upon to design the country’s first monument to British playwright William Shakespeare in the heart of the Russian capital.
A competition to design the new monument was launched by the Moscow Museum, the Union of Moscow Architects and the British Council.
The winning design will be erected outside the city’s Old English Court (Stariy Angliskiy Dvor): the ancient wooden building which hosted England’s ambassadorial and trading office in Russia between 1556 and 1649. The outpost, which was the first official residence for a Western power in the Russian capital, is now part of the Moscow Museum.
As well as seeing their vision of the bard brought to life, the winner will receive a cash bonus of $4,400 (250,000 rubles).
