A new exhibition exploring visual identity in the New East is launching in London with Calvert 22 Foundation.
Post-Soviet Visions is a group photography show gathering work from a young generation of artists rising to prominence some 25 years after the fall of communism.
Featuring rising image makers from Georgia, Germany, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan, the show captures new identities emerging across the region. Instead of old binaries of East vs West, or socialist vs capitalist, the images capture a generation shaped by issues that are personal rather than the political; by questions of sexuality, gender and style.
As well as a private viewing on 22 February, the exhibition will also host a number of events and panels, including sessions dedicated to fashion, architecture, photography.
A fashion symposium — organised in collaboration with the ICA and TrAIN: The Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation, University of the Arts London — is also taking place as a special, one-day event.
