The ruins of Yekaterinburg’s unfinished Soviet TV tower have finally been demolished as part of the city’s preparations to host the 2018 World Cup.
The demolition took place on Saturday amid protests from local residents who rushed to defend what they described as a Yekateriburg landmark.
Construction on the brutalist building began in 1983, but ground to a halt following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The tower had already become the city’s tallest building when work stopped in 1991, reaching 220 metres or 26-storeys high. Architects had originally planned for the building to reach 360 metres tall.
The ruins became a popular haunt for roofers, urban explorers and BASE jumpers, but the entrance was sealed in 2000 following several fatal accidents.
