Polyphonic: watch Romania's best contemporary poetry come to life

Bucharest-based artist Raluca Popa is bringing Romania’s best contemporary poetry to life with new animations.

Popa illustrated works by ten young Romanian poets from diverse ethnic backgrounds, including Michael Astner, Andrei Dósa, Robert Gabriel Elekes, and Henriette Kemenes.

Her work draws on years of experience as a background artist for different animated films. “At the moment I see myself situated in-between the foreground and the background, in-between the affirming aesthetics of an artwork and the subordinate nature of a décor,” she says. “Part of my work tries to disrupt this arrangement.”

Popa’s animated verse was showcased in the UK in Polyphonic: a show produced by the National Museum of Romanian Literature in Bucharest and presented by the National Book Centre and the Romanian Cultural Institute in London as part of Romania’s programme at the London Book Fair 2018.

Curated by Simona Nastac, the show will also go on to the European Poetry Festival.
