Wonder women: the online fashion magazine rebooting the meaning of beauty

12 January 2015

A cross between The Gentlewoman and Jezebel with a hint of Rookie Mag, online women’s magazine Wonderzine has published many complex studies on beauty in art and the sociology of gender alongside more conventional stories on pop culture and fashion. Founded in 2013, the Moscow-based magazine’s team of stylists and photographers has taken on the task of redefining perceptions of contemporary fashion in Russia. We profiled their efforts soon after the launch and since then the magazine has continued to grow in strength. Their shoots feature ordinary women instead of models and explore concepts of age and body image. In a country where feminism remains a taboo word, Wonderzine was the first to declare that style has less to do with being sexually attractive, and much more about self-expression and inner confidence. Oversized jeans, black lipstick, sportswear and multicoloured fur coats, elegant silk blouses combined with nose piercing: it’s not about being sexy in the eyes of men, it’s about pleasing only one gaze, your own in the mirror.
