Snap decisions: around the world with an instant camera

Travel snaps are surely one of the primal forms of photography: we all have a couple of holiday albums in a drawer somewhere. For photographer Valeriy Belobeev, capturing strange, stunning, or atmospheric locations has become a way of bringing something personal back into his profession. Inspired by his extensive travels, he created Been There Once, a travel blog shot entirely on Fuji Instax. “I much prefer Fuji’s rectangular frame to the classic Polaroid square,” says Belobeev. “The whole world switched to digital, and instant photography is one of the last frontiers. It’s quite expensive so you tend to think more before pressing the shutter button, plus you have the magic of the unexpected: you never know what it’s going to look like.” Belobeev has captured mountains in the south of Russia, the narrow streets of Tbilisi, remote corners of the United States, hidden gems in European capitals and cities across the new east. “The choice of locations is based purely on intuition. I think I’d make a great location manager,” he says.
