Point of view: LA band Warpaint’s St Petersburg diary

Since forming in 2004, US indie rock band Warpaint have produced just two albums: the critically acclaimed The Fool in 2010 and now a second, self-titled LP. No surprise then that fans around the world have jumped at the chance to see them on their current tour. When the LA quartet — Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman, Jenny Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa — stopped off in Russia in November last year, The Calvert Journal handed them a disposable camera to document their visit. This Point of View album from their time in St Petersburg provides an exclusive glimpse into their world: we see them on their tour bus, visiting a local flea market and getting ready backstage for their gig at the city’s hip A2 club. “We were so excited to finally play in Russia,” said Wayman. “Some of the first fans we ever had outside of LA were Russian. They found us on Myspace and have contributed to our confidence in ourselves as a band that can speak to the world. When we went to Russia we found that we have given some of the same kind of confidence back to them. We were stopped by a girl in the street and told that she was afraid to play music until she heard our band. We gave her the courage to to do it and to find other girls to work with too. What a huge triumph for us!! Russia is beautiful. The people are beautiful and heartfelt and deep. Our fans there are the best fans.”
